Description

Mountfield Parish Church is a detached Church of Ireland church built around 1828 on the south side of Inisclan Road, near Omagh. It was funded by the Board of First Fruits, a body established to support the construction of Protestant churches in Ireland. The church is a good and intact example of a small rural church, with all its original features surviving. Its elevated setting overlooking Mountfield is notable.

The building comprises a rectangular nave with a square tower containing an entrance porch built around 1860, and a single-storey gabled vestry to the north. The walls are coursed rubble with sandstone quoins over a sandstone plinth. The roofs are pitched natural slate with deep overhanging eaves, concrete ridge tiles, and timber bargeboards.

The church displays a restrained style, though the tower is unusually detailed. The principal elevation faces south and consists of a two-window-wide nave with the tower abutting its left side. The west gable is blank. Windows throughout contain leaded stained glass in stepped surrounds with sandstone sills and gothic styling.

The tower is a two-stage structure. The first stage contains a window with hood moulding and gothic double-leaf vertically sheeted entrance doors in a chamfered stepped sandstone surround with hood moulding to the south. The second, or bell, stage is delineated by a platband and features gothic louvred openings with hood moulding on each elevation except the east, topped by an octagonal stone spire over a cavetto moulded base.

The north elevation contains windows to left and right, with a vestry abutting at centre containing a single window and a gothic vertically sheeted timber entrance door to the west. The east elevation contains a single intersecting tracery timber framed window with leaded stained glass.

The church stands in a modern churchyard established around 2000 on an elevated site bounded to the south and east by recent wire fencing. The site is bounded to the road at the north by rubble walling with rubble coping, accessed through rendered square gate pillars supporting a pair of cast-iron gates.

Historical records confirm the church's 1828 construction date. The OS Memoirs (1821 to 1836) record that the church was built in 1828 at a cost of 900 pounds, granted by the Board of First Fruits, and describe it as "the only public building in the surrounding country" with an arch "of the plainest description". The building appears in its current form on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1833. The Townland Valuation records it simply as 'Church', valued at £5 12 shillings. Griffith's Valuation of 1858 records the lessor as Sir Beresford B McMahon, valued at £6.
