Description

Attached two-bay single-storey direct-entry vernacular dwelling, built circa 1820, located on the south side of Liscabble Road, Gortin, County Tyrone. The building has a rectangular plan with a small windbreak porch to the east and a continuous outshot at the west. A two-storey exposed random rubble outbuilding stands to the south.

The house remains largely intact in terms of its traditional massing and proportion, though detailing has been partially altered and its setting has been compromised by various changes and degradation. The pitched roof is covered in asbestos sheeting. Brick corbelled gable chimneystacks rise above the gable ends. Half-round cast-iron rainwater goods are fitted. The walls are whitewashed lime rendered rubble. Windows, now largely removed, were originally 2/2 timber sliding sashes with no glass remaining.

The principal elevation faces east with the small windbreak porch positioned off centre at the left. Window openings are present at each side. The left (south) gable is abutted by the two-storey exposed random rubble outbuilding. The rear (west) elevation is abutted by the continuous outshot with exposed random rubble walling; three small openings with stone lintels are present. The right (north) gable contains a single window at loft level.

The two-storey outbuilding to the south has a pitched natural slate roof with blue and black clay ridge tiles. Its exposed random rubble walling features a corbelled eaves course. The east elevation has scattered fenestration with much of the timber framing from windows and doors now removed. The left (south) gable contains a single door opening at centre. The rear elevation contains a single segmental-arched-headed opening with stone lintels.

The building stands within a remote rural setting in the mountainous area west of Gortin. Two further traditionally constructed outbuildings are present to the north and east, both with corrugated metal roofs. The dwelling is accessed from a lane to the east.

A building is shown on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1833. By the second edition (1854) the original house had been extended to the south by the addition of an outbuilding, with a further freestanding outbuilding apparent to the northwest. By the fourth edition (1953) a further outbuilding had been added to the northeast.

The house was not included in the Townland Valuation but appears in Griffith's Valuation and is valued at 15 shillings. The occupier is recorded as Andrew York, leasing from Major Cole Hamilton. The York family continued to lease the house and offices until 1909 when they held it in fee. In 1933 valuers noted that the house consisted of one room and a kitchen and valued it at £1. In 1940 the plot was revalued because a new house had been built, held by Thomas Yorke Junior in fee.
