Description
7 Alexandra Place, Sion Mills, is a mid-terrace house built around 1880 as workers' housing for the Herdman's flax spinning mill. The house is the fifth from the left in a terrace of seven, located on the west side of Melmount Road.
The building is rectangular in plan and is now one-and-a-half storeys in height, with a two-storey gabled extension to the west added around 2000. The roof is pitched natural slate with blue and black clay ridge tiles over deep overhanging eaves, finished with decorative timber bargeboards. A smooth rendered chimney with concrete coping and replacement clay pots rises from the roof. The walls are painted roughcast over a smooth banded plinth.
The principal elevation faces east and contains a square-headed opening with smooth rendered architrave holding a replacement vertically-sheeted timber door at the right, a single window at the left, and a central gabled dormer to the attic. Windows throughout are replacement square-headed uPVC casements set in smooth rendered architraves with painted masonry sills. Cast-iron half-round gutters and round downpipes drain the roof.
The south gable is abutted by an adjoining house, while the north gable is also abutted by a neighbouring property. The west elevation, created by the extension, contains a single window at each floor and a square-headed uPVC door at ground floor level to the right. The house is directly accessed from the street at the east. A roughcast boundary wall with concrete coping encloses a rear yard, accessed through a vertically-sheeted timber gate.
The building forms part of the planned workers' village established by the Herdman family, comparable to Sir Titus Salt's Saltaire. Valuation records from 1879 indicate that houses numbered 3 to 20 were valued at £2 10 shillings and were described as "house, office and yard." The building first appears on the third edition Ordnance Survey map of 1905. The ground floor return has been substantially remodelled with first floor accommodation added around 2000. Despite alterations and extensions affecting both this house and the adjoining terrace, the general massing and historic significance of these worker's cottages contribute to the character of Sion Mills Conservation Area.
