Bridge over Douglas Burn, Knock Road, Douglas Bridge, Strabane, BT82 8QR

This is a single-span road bridge, built in 1859 to carry Knock Road over Douglas Burn. Constructed during the mid-19th century, the bridge is built from ashlar sandstone for the spandrels, piers, and abutments, set upon a sandstone plinth. It features a rubble parapet with sandstone coping, and the ends of the parapet are rounded. The single, segmental-headed arch is formed of ashlar sandstone voussoirs, and a sandstone string course runs along the carriageway. The arch soffits are of squared sandstone rubble, and the embankments to the north and south are constructed of rubble. The carriageway is approximately 5 metres wide. A datestone within the parapet wall is inscribed "BRIDGE BUILT BY WILLIAM DIGS 1859." The bridge first appears on the 1905 Ordnance Survey map, where a ford is marked on the site in the 1855 edition. It is situated in a rural setting to the east of Strabane, with agricultural land bounded by hedging to the east and west of the road. While it is an interesting example of industrial archaeology, the bridge is not of sufficient interest to warrant formal listing.
