Description

Killeter Bridge is an impressive four-span road bridge, built around 1780, carrying Carn Road over the River Derg. The bridge's hump-backed form initially resembles those of 17th-century packhorse bridges, but its multi-span design and parapet walls indicate a later, 18th-century construction, preceding the widespread use of cut-stone ornamentation. The bridge has been recently repaired in places, but these repairs do not diminish its overall quality and impact within the rural setting, representing an excellent example of 18th-century engineering in rural Ireland.

The bridge features a roughly constructed random rubble abutments, spandrels, and parapets, with square drainage channels in the centre of the elevations. Cement repairs are visible to the coping. Four round-headed arches are defined by rubble voussoirs, and V-shaped cutwaters are present on the piers over a roughcast plinth. The arch soffits are cement rendered, and the carriageway is approximately 5 meters wide. The south parapet wall has been partially replaced with a recent rubble walling section to the west and rendered walling to the east. Stone steps provide access to the riverbank at the north-east corner.

The road is bordered on both sides by hedging, connecting it to agricultural land. The bridge is situated on a rural road west of Castlederg within a predominantly agricultural setting, with a farm complex located to the south.

Historical records show the bridge was uncaptioned on the 1833 Ordnance Survey map and subsequently labeled ‘Killeter Br’ on the 1853 map. Nearby are St Bestius’ Church of Ireland and the town of Killeter. Photographs from the McCutcheon collection depict an inscribed stone from the bridge found on a neighbouring farm, bearing the date 1786 and the names of builders, although the names are largely illegible, with only "John Campbell" identifiable.
