Description

The Church of the Sacred Heart is a detached, symmetrical Roman Catholic church built in 1896, located on the south side of Dergbrough Road in Plumbridge, County Tyrone. It is one of the most significant buildings in the town, occupying a raised setting that enhances its prominence in the landscape.

The church follows a cruciform plan with a nave, a square tower at the west end, and a gabled chancel at the east end. Single-storey lean-to extensions project from the north and south re-entrant angles. The building is constructed of coursed rock-faced red sandstone with stepped ashlar quoins and a projecting chamfered plinth. Roofs are pitched natural slate with crenellated red clay ridge tiles, raised flat stone verges, moulded kneeler stones, and a cavetto moulded eaves course. Cast-iron rainwater goods with ogee profile gutters and square downpipes drain the roofs. Two chimney-stacks to the east gable feature offsetting and cross finials at the apex.

Windows throughout are pointed-arched-headed and contain leaded stained glass with margin lights. Each is set within a stepped chamfered ashlar surround with rock-faced voussoirs above and projecting splayed cills. Secondary glazing has been added to the nave.

The principal elevation faces west, presenting a gable abutted at its centre by a two-stage square tower. The exposed gable section contains single windows to left and right. The tower is detailed to match the nave, with a projecting stepped plinth. Its first stage includes the principal entrance on the south elevation, paired windows to the west, and a blank north elevation. The second stage contains single windows to north and south, with an octagonal pediment to the west surmounted by a niche containing a statue. A continuous string course forms a hoodmould beneath this feature. The tower terminates with a moulded string course surmounted by a crenellated parapet.

The entrance comprises replacement double-leaf vertically sheeted timber doors within a rebated chamfered stepped ashlar surround, surmounted by a hoodmould with label-stops and rock-faced voussoirs. Three masonry steps provide access.

The north elevation is four windows wide, with each window divided by a stepped angle-buttress featuring offsetting. The nave is abutted at its left by a double-height gabled transept detailed as the nave. The transept's north gable contains three central windows, the central one being taller, with a single window to the right cheek. The left cheek is abutted by a single-storey extension with a hipped roof; the exposed section is blank. The north extension's east elevation contains a projection with a vertically sheeted timber entrance door within a chamfered surround with moulded stop, a single window at the right cheek, and another at the right. The north elevation features a projection at the right containing a vertically sheeted timber entrance door within a chamfered surround with moulded stop, with a single window at the left cheek and another at the left.

The east gable is abutted at its centre by the gabled chancel, which contains two windows with geometric bar tracery surmounted by a quatrefoil tracery window. A stone cross finial crowns the apex. The right cheek is abutted by a single-storey extension with a hipped roof. The left cheek is similarly detailed. A door in the left extension bears a date lintel engraved with '1896'. The south elevation mirrors the north, being four windows wide.

The church stands within a churchyard containing grave markers dating from the late nineteenth century to the present day. The site is bounded to the road at the east by a roughcast rendered wall with segmental stone coping. Vehicular access is provided via square rendered piers supporting replacement cast-metal gates. The church and car park are also accessible from Dergbrough Road at the north via the parochial house.

The exterior remains largely unchanged from its construction date. However, the interior has undergone extensive refurbishment, including replacement doors, new flooring, and replacement timber pews. A secondary entrance vestibule and gallery in the nave may also have been added during this period. A plaque in the tower documents restoration work carried out between August 1989 and August 1990, inspired by Father Denis McConologue, the parish priest.

Historical records show that the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1833 depicts an earlier Roman Catholic chapel in the town. Griffith's Valuation records this earlier chapel and yard valued at £8 15 shillings. The land was leased from John MacFarland, with a graveyard added in 1888. Valuation Revisions record the 'site of new RC chapel' in fieldbooks dating from 1894 to 1907, with the church first appearing on the third edition Ordnance Survey map of 1905, captioned 'RC Church'. The similar construction style and materiality throughout indicate that all parts of the church, including the square tower at the west and the chancel at the east, date from the same period of 1896.
