Description
A range of farm outbuildings dating to the later Victorian period, likely constructed between 1860 and 1879, stands opposite Elagh House on the Upper Galliagh Road in Londonderry. The buildings are reasonably well preserved, although the farmyard has been partially obscured by modern structures. The arrangement of the outbuildings is symmetrical, forming a near-square around a farmyard, and possesses a somewhat industrial character. The farmyard is enclosed on three sides, with a wide, central entrance from Upper Galliagh Road. The ground slopes from north to south across the yard.
The outbuildings are stone built with brick detailing around the openings and have pitched roofs covered with natural slates. To the front, facing Upper Galliagh Road, the east range has no windows or doors. The courtyard facade features segmental, wide openings for cart access, each fitted with a single door. Regularly spaced windows are also present at ground floor level, maintaining a sense of balance. Upper floor windows are similarly spaced and vary in design, some with 16 panes, some with 9, others with shutters, and a few louvred. Outer walls of the north, south, and west ranges feature predominantly shuttered or louvred windows. A small, slated lean-to addition, built in matching stone, adjoins the outer wall of the south range. The roofs are double-pitched, without trusses, and feature coupled ties at wide centres, supporting purlins and closely spaced rafters. Some ranges incorporate lofts. Additional ranges run parallel to the main buildings to the south and east. Modern steel-framed and corrugated iron structures within the farmyard disrupt the original layout and visual impact of the complex. The buildings were not shown on an Ordnance Survey map of 1850, but are indicated on the 1900 edition.
