Description
A relatively plain three-storey terraced house built in 1867, situated on the northeast side of the Bowling Green in Strabane. The building was converted to an office in 1997–98, with extensions added to the rear and the interior substantially altered.
The asymmetrical front elevation faces southwest. The ground floor contains a panelled timber door to the left, with a rectangular fanlight fitted with patterned glass and a 'blind' slidelight, all enclosed within a moulded surround. To the right of the doorway are two identical windows with PVC-u frames and moulded surrounds. The first floor has three similar windows, while the second floor has three shorter versions. The front façade is finished in painted lined render, with raised plastic letters spelling out the firm's name above the ground floor windows.
The rear elevation presents a largely modern appearance. A substantial part-two, part single-storey gabled return and extension of recent construction replaces what was originally a considerably narrower return. Both the return and the exposed rear façade of the main building section are finished in painted render with windows of various sizes featuring modern timber frames and concrete cills. The main roof is gabled with a hip over the projecting rear section and an unusual lean-to-like rise at the southeast end, which appears to be a recent alteration. The front of the roof is slated; the rear covering could not be observed. Two rendered chimneysstacks are present, one to the northwest and a larger one to the southeast, shared with the neighbouring property. Rainwater goods are of cast-iron and PVC-u.
The site was developed by 1833–34 according to Ordnance Survey mapping, though the present building dates from 1867. Its first recorded occupant was Elizabeth Lyons, with Robert Hamilton as immediate lessor. Subsequent residents included Walter Spratt (1868), Miss Glass (1869–72), William Irvine, John McIvor (1876), James McIvor (1885), Miss Higgins (1885–89), Miss Hanna (1889–90), and Andrew Thomas Brown. R. Clarke occupied the property from 1889 and remained as leaseholder until at least 1905. Annie Wilson acquired the freehold by 1935 and occupied the building in 1941. Later occupants included Mary J. Clarke (1941), Charles Clarke (1947), and Herbert D.H. Cooper (1948). Frederick Heaney purchased the freehold in 1955 and was recorded as still occupying the house in 1972, before the 1997–98 conversion to office use.
