Description
A former two-bay, direct entry, stone-built thatched house located near Killeter in Co. Tyrone, dating from the early 19th century (1820–1839). The building is approached by a short lane crossing the Crigh Burn, positioned approximately four miles south-west from Killeter and facing south-east.
As surveyed in October 2000, the structure comprised a single-storey harled and whitened stone house with a thatched roof covering a byre on the south-west side. The roof structure had substantially collapsed on the north-east side, with the standing gable revealing multiple cement fillet flashings from various roofing periods. The gable rose to a rendered chimneystack with narrow coping and a protruding flue liner. A second rendered chimneystack, positioned between the dwelling and store on the south-west side, was finished with a flaunched top and one flue liner.
The entrance was protected by a square-jambed windbreak porch with the roof extended over it. A top-hung window existed to the left (south-east) of the porch, with evidence of a matching opening on the right (north-east) side before collapse. The byre was accessed by a timber ledged and sheeted door. An opening in the south-west gable had been blocked with stone, with a narrow slit remaining; a matching slit towards the front corner was sealed. The rear wall contained a small opening in the store, an outshot projection, a small plain window, and a large empty opening retaining its outer timber window framing. Remains of a shed abutted the north-east gable. A separate outbuilding, set at an angle to the south-west gable, was stone-built and whitened with a corrugated iron roof, not appearing on Ordnance Survey maps of 1833 or 1853.
The building appears on the Ordnance Survey map of 1833–34 and subsequent maps. It was not recorded in the first valuation of circa 1834. The owner requested listing as a historic building in September 1992. The Historic Buildings Council was consulted on 8 April 1994, with statutory listing occurring on 11 October 1994. The thatched roof was in poor condition when inspected in 1992. By 1994, rushes had been applied and external surfaces whitened, though further work was deemed necessary. Subsequently, sections of the building collapsed and portions of the roof fell in. The building was delisted on 29 December 2006. Historic fabric has been substantially lost.
