Description

A semi-detached two-storey house built around 1820, located on the west side of Moyle Road in Newtownstewart. The building is rectangular in plan with a pitched roof of natural slate and blue/black clay ridge tiles. The chimneys are rendered with ruled-and-lined finish and retain original clay pots.

The walls are roughcast render, with ruled-and-lined render to the south gable. The principal elevation faces east and contains two bays. The left bay has a single window to each floor; the right bay contains a replacement square-headed partially glazed entrance door accessed by two stone steps, with a single window at first floor. Windows are replacement top-hung square-headed painted timber casements with painted sandstone sills. The south gable is blank. The west elevation contains timber-framed 6/6 and 3/3 sliding sash windows at first floor, a timber-framed 6/6 sliding sash window at ground floor right, and a replacement square-headed uPVC door at ground floor left. The north gable is abutted by the adjoining house.

The building originally had a single-bay layout but was extended into three bays and divided into two separate dwellings around 1890. The house is directly accessed from the road at the east, with an enclosed garden to the west bounded on all sides by rubble walling and accessed via a metal gate to the north.

An attached two-storey outbuilding stands to the west. It has a pitched corrugated metal roof and whitened rubble walls. Windows are timber-framed casements, with a vertically-sheeted timber entrance door and loading doors at first floor. The outbuilding has been present since at least the 1850s. Documentary evidence indicates that a forge was originally located here, later relocating to a separate building to the rear.

Replacement uPVC half-round gutters and round downpipes have been installed, with cast-iron and aluminium downpipes to the rear.

Archival records show buildings on this site from the 1833 Ordnance Survey Map. By Griffith's Valuation of 1856–64, the plot contained two separate buildings described as a house, offices, yard and garden, with an outbuilding in the yard. One office was described as a forge. The main house measured 31.6 by 22 by 14 feet. Around 1899, the main house was extended and split into two separate dwellings. By the 1898 Town Plan, the smithy had relocated to an outbuilding to the rear.

The building is locally significant and holds group value with the adjoining house. Although it has lost its original windows and door, it remains an example of late Georgian urban vernacular with good proportions. The listing extends to the house, outbuilding, and boundary wall.
