Description

This is a terrace of two houses on Main Street, Limavady, built between 1900 and 1919 in an Arts and Crafts style. The buildings were originally constructed as a sexton’s house and a teacher’s house for the nearby Ogilby Trust National School. Number 92 is slightly wider than number 90.

The facades are rendered and painted, with a smooth render finish to the ground floor and a painted plinth course. The windows are sash windows with three horizontal divisions, the top panel divided into four smaller panes, exhibiting a strong vertical emphasis. Each house has a door with a plain rectangular fanlight, both protected by hood mouldings. The ground floor windows of number 90 align with similar windows above, while number 92 has paired windows recessed on the ground floor, which align with a pair of windows above the door. The first floor is roughcast, sloping outwards to a plaster cornice at the top of the ground floor. A frieze of two exposed bricks in a warm brown/red colour adds an ornamental detail. Natural slate covers the roof, which overhangs by 350mm, with cast iron gutters. A brick chimney rises from the midpoint of the ridge. The side gables are close to neighbouring buildings, while the roof overhangs a further 200mm, supported by decorative purlins with matchboarding between. To the rear, each house has a projecting return with rendered walls in sand cement. Kitchen windows are in the form of widened casements. Number 92 is painted.

The buildings' plan forms differ from those shown on an 1848 map; the current arrangement is documented on a 1907 town map. Interior fittings remain, adding character, although the interiors are described as somewhat cramped. Originally, a curate of Christ Church lived in number 92. Number 90 has most recently been used as office accommodation, including by the Limavady Link Office.
