Description

Portstewart War Memorial stands on the promenade overlooking the sea and was erected in 1924. It comprises a life-size bronze statue of a British soldier in army uniform holding a rifle, mounted on a large tapered limestone plinth set on three steps with moulded cornice and plinth framing. The memorial was designed by Louis Frederick Roslyn of London, a renowned English sculptor best known for his war memorials throughout the United Kingdom following the First World War. This is the only work Roslyn carried out in Northern Ireland. The builder contracted to execute the design was John Robinson & Son, granite, marble and stone merchants from York Street, Belfast.

The memorial was erected by Coleraine Borough Council and completed in 1924 at a cost of approximately £800, raised through public donations. It was unveiled on 11th November 1924 by Lady Cecil Craig, wife of Northern Ireland's first Prime Minister James Craig, and was dedicated by the Dean of Derry as part of the local remembrance ceremony.

The stone plinth displays commemorative plaques on its north, east and south elevations. The front (east-facing) polished stone plaque is inscribed: "To the glory of God and in grateful remembrance of the men of Portstewart who gave their lives in the Great War 1914-1918 Their name liveth for evermore". Below this is a bronze plaque listing the names of the thirty local men who died during the First World War.

Following the Second World War, a second bronze plaque was added to the plinth, inscribed: "This plaque commemorates the following who gave their lives in the world war 1939-1945", listing the names of thirteen additional men from the community who fell during that conflict. The memorial is further distinguished by a more recently added plaque on the north face, dedicated to the men of the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division of the United States Army, who were stationed at Camp Cromore in Portstewart from 9th January to 11th March 1944. This plaque records their participation in the Normandy, Holland and Belgium campaigns of the Second World War. The memorial is thus a rare example of a war memorial that commemorates both American forces and those from the local community.
