East gate lodge at Ormiston House, 48 Hawthornden Road, Belfast, Co Down

This is a small, simple, single-storey gabled gate lodge, dating to c.1867, located at the eastern entrance to Ormiston House on Hawthornden Road, Belfast. It was likely designed by David Bryce, the architect of Ormiston House itself. The lodge is constructed of squared undressed sandstone and has group value with the other listed buildings at this address.

The property faces roughly north, presenting a symmetrical front façade. The central feature is a doorway with a bevelled surround and a plain sheeted door, flanked by single windows with similar surrounds. All windows are now boarded up, although plain sash windows remain behind the boarding. A single, centrally placed window is located on each gable. To the rear is a small single-storey projection, now largely obscured by vegetation; this originally appears to have been an open yard which was roofed over and converted into a kitchen sometime in the mid-20th century, probably in the 1940s. The front façade is in squared undressed sandstone, with much of the gables now obscured by greenery. The rear projection also appears to be constructed of similar stone, and has a flat corrugated iron roof. The main roof is gabled and slated, with stone ridge tiles and stone coping and kneelers to the parapets. A single centrally placed sandstone chimneystack rises from the roof, with two low pots.

Ormiston House was built between 1865 and 1867 for James Combe. The gate lodge was originally comprised of the main rectangular building and a walled yard to the rear. The property was vacated after 1974.
