Description

1 Lennoxvale, Malone Road, Belfast

Located in Belfast's university area, this is an Italianate style detached house built in 1924 to designs by architect Thomas Callender. Despite its 1920s construction date, its appearance—with various bays and an Ionic portico—is more akin to a mid to later Victorian residence. The property is set east of Malone Road and surrounded by a large garden, now accessed via a driveway to the south shared with the neighbouring property. The building has been vacant for some time, with all openings except the entrance currently boarded over.

The house is roughly square in plan with a slightly lower two and part single-storey return to the rear. The front elevation faces north and is symmetrical. At the centre of the ground floor stands an Ionic portico with columns set on tall wall-like bases. Above the corniced entablature is a relatively deep blocking course; the column capitals are partly damaged. Stone steps lead through the portico to the entrance, a panelled double door with a large rectangular fanlight. To the left of the portico is a full-height curved bay with a conical roof and three window openings to each floor. The windows on each floor of the bay share a cill, with a moulded string course between ground and first floor levels, and a moulded eaves course encompassing much of the other elevations. An identical bay stands to the right of the portico, and at first floor level between the bays is another, larger window.

The east elevation consists largely of the main portion with the return to the far left. The main section has two widely-spaced windows to each floor, with the left window on both floors broader than that to the right. The east face of the two-storey return has two first floor windows. The ground floor of this face was formerly abutted by a single-storey gabled projection, presumably a conservatory, which has been demolished but whose outline remains visible. The single-storey portion of the return is obscured from the south by a tall yard wall with a single doorway.

The south elevation features, on the left of the ground floor of the main section, a single-storey curved bay with three windows and a tall parapet totally obscuring its roof. To the right of the bay is another window, with two more non-identical widely-spaced windows to the first floor. The two-storey return has a large ground floor window and a much smaller first floor window. The single-storey section has one small window. The two-storey return's south face has two small first floor windows. The single-storey section's south face is obscured by plant growth but internal evidence suggests it is devoid of openings.

The walls are finished in painted lined render with a bevelled base course. The slated roof has three tall rendered chimneystacks with wide bevelled bases, corbelling, and uniform clay pots. Rainwater goods are cast-iron with square section downspouts. Most windows retain single or double timber sash frames. A small single-storey hip-roofed outbuilding stands to the rear. The original driveway to the north-west features wrought-iron gates in a somewhat late Art Nouveau, almost Art Deco, manner.

Though largely intact externally, important elements of the internal detailing have been removed. The property was latterly used by Queen's University and is situated within a conservation area.
