Description

Tiled street sign supported on a fluted cast iron post, located on Ormeau Road where it joins Ravenhill Road. The sign is constructed from individual 5-inch tall glazed tiles, each displaying a white letter on a black background, spelling out "ORMEAU ROAD". These tiles are mounted on a cast iron back plate. Blank tiles fill extra space on the lower row, while moulded black tiles form the sign's perimeter, which is restrained with a wrought iron strap. The tiled portion measures 14 inches in height, and the overall sign stands 64 inches tall. The fluted circular post tapers from 3 inches wide at the top to 3.25 inches at its octagonal base, with a projecting ring at top and bottom and a ball finial above the tiled sign. An adjacent similar sign for Ravenhill Road is also present but has lost its ball finial.

This sign is a fine example of the street signage erected on major thoroughfares in the early twentieth century by Belfast Corporation, likely to assist tram passengers in locating their stops. The movement towards standardised signage began in late 1904 when the Police Committee established a sub-committee to investigate the matter. Initial proposals for enamel signage were rescinded in July 1907, when councillors agreed that tile street signs should be used on leading thoroughfares and iron signs on other streets in accordance with submitted patterns, whilst prohibiting hanging or projecting signs on main arteries. This standardisation was prompted by the city's rapid growth and the need for legible street markers. The Corporation's takeover and electrification of the tram system in 1905 likely provided additional impetus, as passengers required clear identifiers for roads along their journeys. Based on the regularity of surviving examples—featuring distinctive sans serif lettering and fluted cast-iron columns with ball finials—all such signs appear to be Corporation installations dating from 1907 or later. The cast-iron columns began to be superseded by square section concrete posts around the early 1930s. Ormeau Road is a pre-1830s thoroughfare, and this sign, which lies along a pre-1907 tram route, was likely installed between 1907 and circa 1927.

Though the tram system ceased operation many years ago, these prominently positioned signs continue to serve a useful function for today's public transport passengers. They hold historic interest for Belfast's citizens and form part of the city's rich legacy of cast iron street furniture, which includes Parliamentary Boundary Posts, Post Boxes, and Telephone Kiosks. This example has group value with the other listed street sign nearby at Rosetta Avenue.
