Description
A larger than life bronze statue of Queen Victoria, created in 1903 by J. Wenlock Rollins and unveiled at the official opening of the Royal Victoria Hospital on 27 July 1903. The statue was presented to the hospital by W. J. Pirrie (later Lord Pirrie), a driving force behind the hospital's construction.
The statue depicts Queen Victoria seated upon a throne, facing north towards Grosvenor Road. Her clothing and jewels are elaborately carved in detail. She wears a small openwork frame crown and holds an orb and sceptre. The throne itself features a segmental top-rail, corbelled stiles, a carved splat, and carved sphinxes to the arms. The statue stands on a square section painted cast concrete plinth.
Originally positioned above the door of the porch to the Original Hospital, the statue has since been relocated to the centre of the quadrangle formed by the front of the Original Hospital and the Musgrave Wing in the grounds of the Royal Victoria Hospital, where it now serves as a monument in what is currently used as parking space.
J. Wenlock Rollins was born in Redhill, Surrey, and was one of the leading sculptors of his era. He studied at Birmingham School of Art, the South London Technical School, and the Royal Academy Schools. During the 1890s, he worked on panels for St George's Hall in Liverpool and carvings for Croydon Municipal Buildings. He had previously created Doulton terracotta panels for Birmingham General Hospital in 1896. In 1901, Rollins exhibited a sketch model of the Queen Victoria statue at the spring exhibition of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists.
The Royal Victoria Hospital was designed by William Henman of Henman & Cooper, who had previously been responsible for Birmingham General Hospital. The foundation stone was laid in early 1901, and the hospital was officially opened by King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra during their visit to Ireland. The statue has group value with the other listed structures within the Royal Victoria Hospital complex, including the King Edward VII Buildings, the Original Hospital, the perimeter wall with gates and lodges, the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children, the Microbiology building, the Musgrave Wing, and the Hospital Building.
