Description

A cast-iron administrative marker post dating to 1918, marking the outer boundary of Belfast Corporation's jurisdiction and Victoria District Electoral Division within it. The post is embedded in the footpath on the south-east side of Belmont Avenue, positioned at a now-disused side entrance to Campbell College, with a red brick wall and entrance gates to the school's grounds behind it.

The post has a slightly tapered cylindrical profile, measuring approximately 3 feet high by 1 foot in diameter. It features a banded octagonal base and an oversailing flat octagonal top with a slightly smaller fluted circular cap. The front face displays the shield of Belfast Corporation's coat of arms, beneath which is an attached plaque inscribed "Parliamentary / and Municipal / Boundary of / Belfast / Victoria Division / Victoria Ward / 1918".

The post exhibits a degree of decoration beyond what its utilitarian function required. Its cast-iron construction and secure embedding in the pavement reflect the need for durability and tamper-proofing. The setting is significant in that it marks an invisible political boundary at this particular location.

Historically, this post is of considerable interest as a tangible reminder of the general election held on 14 December 1918, the first in Britain and Ireland when nearly everyone—bar women under 30—had the right to vote. It also marks a short-lived period in the province's political development between this election and the formation of Northern Ireland and the Stormont administration in 1922. The post has group value with other boundary posts in the area, forming what is probably the most complete group of administrative markers anywhere in the province. Many such posts have been lost to road widening and random removal, making this example a comparatively rare survivor.
