Description

St Enoch's Presbyterian Church was a High Victorian church of Early French character, designed by A. T. Jackson and constructed between 1860 and 1879. It was located on Carlisle Circus in Belfast, and the site is now occupied by a modern Presbyterian church. The church was built of Scrabo stone coursed rubble.

The exterior featured a triple-gabled front façade with plate tracery and jutting gargoyles, providing a rugged appearance. The façade presented one large and two smaller flanking gables to Carlisle Circus, containing windows with two lights on the sides and a six-light window in two tiers at the centre, all set within two-centre arched openings. The lower stage had three entrances within shouldered openings, each reveal flanked by two circular columns. Quatrefoil windows were incorporated into the adjoining walls. An engaged square tower rose to a crocketed and finialed spire with gablets, the upper stage featuring cusped-headed lancets with louvres. The sides and rear elevations displayed a flatter treatment with repetitive fenestration consisting of three tiers of lancet, cusped lancet, and semi-circular paired windows. Good, bold metalwork railings were present. The spire had been removed some years prior to recording.

The interior was notable for its large, hall-like space with two tiers of galleries wrapping around three sides – a particularly rare arrangement. Before a malicious fire in 1985, the interior was described as very impressive, but the event caused significant damage to the woodwork, organ, rooflights, and ceiling.

The original architects were Thomas Johnson and son. The church was opened in 1872 and was documented in an article by P. Larmour in the Ulster Architect in February 1986. The building was demolished and delisted on 12 December 2007.
