Description
Tiled Street Sign on Donegall Park Avenue at the Corner with Antrim Road
This is a tiled street sign supported on a fluted cast iron post, located at the junction of Donegall Park Avenue and Antrim Road in Belfast. It dates from the early twentieth century and is a fine example of the street furniture erected by Belfast Corporation, probably to assist passengers in locating their stops on the city's tram system.
The sign comprises individual 5-inch tall glazed tiles, each bearing a white letter on a black background, spelling out DONEGALL PARK AVENUE. These tiles are set on a cast iron back plate. Blank tiles fill the extra space on the lower row, and moulded black tiles form the sign's perimeter, restrained by a wrought iron strap. The sign itself measures 14 inches high, with its width determined by the number of letters in the street name. The back plate is bolted to the post in four places. Overall, the sign reaches 62 inches in height. The fluted circular post tapers from 3 inches wide at the top to 3.25 inches at the octagonal base, which has a projecting ring at top and bottom. A ball finial projects above the tiled sign. Unfortunately, the base has become partially buried within the footpath.
Prior to the early 1900s, Belfast street signs lacked uniformity, with developers and residents installing their own designs. Belfast Corporation's move towards standardisation began in late 1904 when the Police Committee established a sub-committee to investigate the matter. Initially, enamel signage was favoured, but in July 1907 the Corporation decided that tile street signs should be used on leading thoroughfares, with iron signs on other streets, and prohibited hanging or projecting signs on main routes. This standardisation was prompted by the city's rapid growth and the need for legible street markers, and likely also by the Corporation's takeover and electrification of the tram system in 1905. The freestanding white-on-black ceramic signs and similarly coloured wall-mounted versions appear to have been introduced or widely adopted around 1907. The regularity of surviving examples—with distinctive sans serif lettering and fluted cast-iron columns with ball finials—indicates that all are Corporation installations from 1907 onwards. Cast-iron columns began to be superseded by square section concrete posts around the early 1930s. Donegall Park Avenue was laid out before 1893 and lay along a pre-1907 tram route; the signs at both ends of this western section were likely installed between 1907 and circa 1930.
These prominently positioned signs continue to serve a useful function for public transport passengers today, despite the tram system's closure many years ago. They hold historic interest as part of Belfast's rich legacy of cast iron street furniture, which includes Parliamentary Boundary Posts, Post Boxes, and Telephone Kiosks. This example has group value with other nearby listed street signs at Parkmount Road, Fortwilliam Park, and two signs at Glastonbury Avenue.
