The Coach Inn, 15-19 Church Square, Banbridge, Co Down, BT32 4AP

The Coach Inn occupies numbers 15-19 Church Square in Banbridge, Co Down. It comprises a block of four two-storey mid-terrace buildings that originated around 1830 and were consolidated into a single public house with nightclub in the 1970s.

The buildings appear on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1833 and on the Townland Valuation town plan of around 1830, where they were valued between £6 and £18. By Griffith's Valuation of around 1862, the four properties were individually occupied private dwellings valued between £10 and £14, numbered 6–9 Church Square. Numbers 6 and 7, situated next to Crozier House, had been divided into separate houses by the 1860s. The properties continued as private dwellings through the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Number 7 Church Square was converted to a public house sometime between 1885 and 1894. Following the First General Revaluation in 1935, number 6 (by then renumbered 15 Church Square) was recorded as a licensed house while the adjoining properties remained dwellings. The rest of the terrace was not converted to public houses until the mid-20th century. Between 1956 and 1972, each property was recorded separately and owned by different proprietors. During the 1970s, numbers 15–19 were consolidated into a single property which became The Coach Inn. This conversion involved making level the previously irregular roofline, as shown in a photograph dated around 1912, resulting in the complete loss of all historic fabric. The building was listed in 1987.

The site is located on Church Square north of Banbridge town centre, opposite the Crozier Monument and forming part of a mixed terrace surrounded by historic buildings.

The building has a rectangular plan form with a large modern block abutted to the rear. The principal elevation faces northwest and is asymmetrically arranged with a modern pub frontage at ground floor centre flanked by single windows and a secondary entrance to the far right. Eight first floor windows are present. The left gable is abutted by an adjoining building consolidated into the main block, while the right gable is abutted by the adjoining building at number 9 Church Square. The rear elevation is completely abutted by a double height modern block.

The exterior has a replacement pitched natural slate roof with replacement rainwater goods. The walling is replacement cement ruled-and-lined render with long-and-short quoins; chimneystacks have been removed. Ground floor windows are replacement timber framed; first floor windows are replacement uPVC. Replacement timber panelled doors with timber door surrounds are present. The exterior and interior contain no apparent historic fabric of interest remaining.
