Description

McSherry's Off-Licence is a late-Georgian three-storey terraced commercial building located on the east side of Church Square, north of Banbridge town centre, in County Down. Built around 1830, it comprises two adjoining three-storey townhouses (numbers 39 and 41) that were originally separate dwellings but were joined together and converted to an off-licence use in or before 1989.

The building is constructed of smooth rendered walling on a smooth rendered plinth, with a pitched natural slate roof featuring terracotta angle ridge tiles and rendered chimneys to either gable. Cast-iron half-round rainwater goods sit on projecting eaves. The principal western elevation is four windows wide across the upper floors. Windows are largely original, with 3/6 sashes to the second floor and 6/6 sashes to the first floor. The ground floor features a 6/6 window to the left and a multi-paned tripartite window with dividing timber pilasters to the right, all with projecting sills. A replacement panelled-and-glazed timber door sits to the left of centre at ground floor. A modern fascia reading "McSherry's Off-Licence" with numbering "39" and "41" spans the ground floor. The north and west elevations are abutted by adjoining buildings. The rear eastern elevation contains four windows to the second floor and three to the first floor, with a gabled single-storey return and a slated lean-to extension, further abutted by a gabled two-storey extension parallel to the main block.

Much of the original architectural character has survived, and the building is a well-preserved example of the small townhouses that developed with Banbridge in the early 19th century. The building fronts Church Square, facing Seapatrick Parish Church, and a large car park occupies the rear, enclosed by modern metal gates around a paved yard.

Historical records show that around 1830, number 39 was valued at £5 8 shillings and occupied by John McMullan, while number 41 was valued at £9 12 shillings and occupied by Matthew Moore. By around 1863, both properties were owned by Jane Bittle. The 1901 Census recorded number 39 as a second-class dwelling with three rooms, occupied by John Hynes, an Assistant Clerk. Number 41 was similarly a second-class dwelling with three rooms, occupied by Thomas Bull, a linen worker. By 1911, both properties had expanded to four rooms each with a shed as the sole outbuilding. Over the period from circa 1863 to 1901, number 39 had at least 14 different occupants and number 41 at least 12 occupants. After Jane Bittle's death in 1879, ownership passed to Thomas Ferguson of Edenderry House. In 1924, William James English took over ownership of number 39 from Thomas Ferguson. When architectural historian C.E.B. Brett wrote about the terrace in 1969, he described numbers 37-41 Church Square as "pleasant three-storey houses of c.1830, stucco, with glazing bars, in some need of decoration". At that time, numbers 39 and 41 were still functioning as separate dwellings.
