War Memorial, Main Street, Groomsport, Bangor, Co Down

A granite war memorial, erected around 1925, stands prominently on the North side of Main Street, Groomsport, overlooking the harbour. It is of group value, demonstrating some social and historic importance. The memorial takes the form of a dressed granite obelisk mounted on a stepped base, set on concrete paving with pre-cast concrete edgings. It faces south. Bronze lettering affixed to the main face reads: "Erected by public subscription; in grateful memory of the men of this district who fell and served in the Great War, 1914-1919," accompanied by a list of the fallen. Lists of those who served abroad are inscribed on the east and west faces. A later polished granite plaque has been added to the base, inscribed with a roll of honour for World War II. The memorial is situated within a grassed public park, accessible via tarmac paths, with tennis courts and a playground nearby. Views extend over the harbour and the coastline to the north. Originally, the memorial was enclosed by an iron railing and gates, with gravel infill; this has been replaced with paving slabs. The site was gifted by Miss Anna Perceval-Maxwell and Colonel the Right Hon. R D Perceval-Maxwell, of Groomsport House, and unveiled on December 27, 1924. The memorial is bounded by granite walling. Its setting has been affected by the loss of the original railings.
