Description

Gate Screen at Seacourt

An ashlar sandstone gate screen dating from around 1865, located at the former entrance to Seacourt on the north side of Maxwell Road in Bangor, County Down. The screen marks the principal entrance to Seacourt (HB23/14/005A), a house built around the same period for Foster Connor, a Belfast linen merchant. The architect remains uncertain, though James Hamilton and Charles Lanyon have both been suggested. The builders were Henrys, who also constructed the Albert Bridge in Belfast.

The gate screen comprises a pair of outer circular piers rising from square pedestals with moulded offsets. Each circular pier is topped by a bell-shaped cap that rises to a square plinth which formerly supported a finial, now lost. These outer piers flank alcove ashlar sandstone dwarf plinth walls on either side of the entrance. The inner piers are square with carved detail at the corners and feature classically styled moulded caps topped with square urn finials. The detailing is distinguished and finely crafted, echoing the classical styling of the main house, which scholars have described as 'innovative' and 'beautifully sculpted'.

All original ironwork has been replaced with steel railings and gates. A later gate lodge dating from around 1920 was demolished around 2006. The gateway now provides access to a modern residential cul-de-sac at Seacourt Gardens rather than to the original house.

The relationship of the gate screen within the broader group has been significantly compromised in recent years. The entrance avenue to the main house has been blocked off, the gate lodge has been demolished, and modern residential development now occupies much of the former grounds, though a formal walled garden remains to the west and a lawned terrace with tennis court lies to the north. Despite these alterations, the gate screen retains significance as the former main entrance to Seacourt, representing fine nineteenth-century craftsmanship and architectural detail.
