21 The Square, Portaferry, Co Down, BT22 1LW

A typical two-storey terrace house built around 1900–1910, located on the west side of The Square in Portaferry town centre. The building sits on a slope rising from south to north and has a frontage of 5.5 metres.

The front (east) façade is asymmetrical in composition. To the ground floor left stands a panelled timber entrance door with patterned glass fanlight, framed by pilasters with stylised leaf capitals and a moulded entablature. A vestibule screen within features acid-etched late Victorian/Edwardian floral patterning. To the right of the doorway is a pair of sash windows with matching moulded frames. The first floor contains a single window to the left and a double window to the right, both similarly decorated and framed. The façade is finished in lined render, painted, with a corbelled eaves course and cast iron ogee gutter. Electricity cabling runs prominently below the eaves course.

The gabled roof is covered in natural slate and carries two yellow brick chimney stacks. Two dormer windows with modern timber frames and moulded plaster surrounds project from the front, also with natural slate to their roofs.

Historical records indicate that a building occupied this site in 1799, recorded in Patrick O'Hare's map as the property of William McCleery. Structures are similarly documented on Ordnance Survey maps of 1834 and 1859, with an earlier two-storey house noted in the Second Valuation of 1863. Photographic evidence from around 1900 shows a predecessor building that may have dated to the 18th century. The present house was constructed approximately 1900–1910, replacing the earlier structure.

The building lies within a conservation area. The rear elevation was not examined during survey.
