Description

Christ Church is a modestly scaled Gothic Revival church of Ireland building, designed by architect Joseph Welland and built around 1854–1856 (the second edition Ordnance Survey map of 1857 marks it as 'New Church', suggesting construction of 1856–7). It stands in a rural setting at the edge of Ballynure village in County Antrim, replacing an earlier church on the adjacent site, now Ballynure Old graveyard. The previous church is said to have been Jonathan Swift's first cure. This new structure cost £2,000 to build and represents a fine example of Welland's work in largely original condition.

The church is a detached double-height structure with a rectangular nave and chancel, a lean-to porch to the east, and a porch to the south-west. The walls are of random rubble basalt with rusticated sandstone quoins and offset splayed buttresses. Roofs are pitched and naturally slated with masonry ridge tiles, simple verges on cavetto-moulded kneeler stones, and corbelled eaves.

A gabled bell-cote stands at the west end, containing an original cast-iron bell set in a chamfered shouldered opening with stepped weathering and finial. A chimneystack is positioned to the east.

The principal south-facing elevation is three windows wide. A gabled porch on the left contains an original Gothic arched vertically sheeted timber entrance door with cast-iron strap hinges and studs, set in a chamfered opening with rubble stone voussoirs and stepped reveal, accessed by masonry steps. Two pairs of cusped Gothic leaded stained glass windows with sandstone surrounds are separated by buttresses, each pair united with rubble voussoirs. The windows have original tracery and are grouped in pairs throughout the building.

The west elevation contains a pair of windows to the centre, each surmounted by a central quatrefoil light with leaded lattice glazing and stepped surround. A small catslide-roofed return to the centre contains a small Gothic window with lattice glazing. To the right, the porch contains a further small Gothic window.

The north elevation has three pairs of windows to the nave, separated by buttresses. A vestry with catslide roof is abutted to the left, containing an original vertically sheeted timber door with cast-iron strap hinges and studs in a chamfered shouldered-arch opening, accessed by masonry steps.

The east elevation is abutted by the chancel, which contains a large Gothic window with intersecting tracery surmounted by a sandstone hood-moulding with label stops. A vestry abutted at the right contains a pair of windows.

The church retains original detailing throughout, including the tracery, entrance doors, bellcote, and original bell. Rainwater goods are cast-iron with profiled gutters and round downpipes.

The church is set within a churchyard at the edge of Ballynure village, with a rectory to the north and the old graveyard to the south. The southern boundary to the road is marked by rubble walling and square sandstone chamfered pillars supporting cast-iron double gates. A pedestrian entrance to the north is provided by a single cast-iron gate supported on chamfered piers.

According to Griffiths Valuation of 1859, the land is valued at £0.15s and the building at £9 15s, later revised to £14 50s. The entry details a house and lands occupied by the Reverend Charles Fallon, suggesting an associated rector's house. The church contains a number of simple and good memorials to the Dobbs family. The lisiting extends to the church, main entrance gate and pillars, and pedestrian gate and pillars.
