Description
These are a pair of semi-detached houses dating from the nineteenth century, located on Main Street in Parkgate. They are considered to have limited architectural or historical significance.
The buildings are two storeys high and are attached to another property on the east side to create a terrace. The walls are rendered with a dry dash finish of pebbles, and the window and door surrounds are in smooth cement render with stop-chamfered edges, although the coved drip mouldings are now largely spalled. The roofs are covered with Bangor blue slates laid in regular courses, topped by two replacement chimneys constructed of rustic brick. The main entrances face north and feature modern rectangular timber panelled and glazed doors. Windows are timber fixed lights with top-hung vents. An elliptically arched coach entrance, with ledged timber double doors set within rusticated surrounds, is located at the left-hand extremity. The exterior is finished with PVC gutter and downpipes. Later single and two-storey rear returns are present, and rear windows are modern, set in plain reveals.
The buildings appear on Ordnance Survey maps from 1832 and 1857, suggesting a possible earlier structure that was later rebuilt or remodelled. Their construction likely occurred between 1860 and 1879.
The houses are situated within the built-up area of the village, set back from Main Street by a tarmac pavement and a broad tarmac parking area. They are adjoined on the east side by a two-storey house of basalt rubble with a rendered west gable, and flanked on the west side by a new housing development currently under construction.
