Description
Downside House is a house dating from around 1700, with a significant refronting in the 18th century. It is constructed from coursed rubble with dressed quoins, and has a concrete double roman tile roof and brick end stacks. The house presents a symmetrical facade in an "L" shape. The front has two storeys and six bays, featuring late 19th-century and mid-20th-century sash windows with glazing bars. A central door opening has a square head and a hollow semi-circular stone hood supported on elaborately moulded stone brackets; a mid-20th-century six-panelled door is in place. A two-storey, four-bay wing extends to the rear, with irregular window placement. One early 19th-century window has a semi-circular head and Gothic glazing, while the remaining windows are mainly two-light mullioned. There are three door openings with plank doors.
