Description

Higher Farmhouse is a detached farmhouse dating primarily to the 17th century, with later additions from the 18th century. It is constructed of coursed, Cary stone rubble with a Welsh slate roof, stepped coped gables, and brick end chimney stacks featuring moulded stone caps. The house has a double-roof plan and a three-bay south elevation. The windows are small-pane casements; three-light windows are found in the outer bays, a two-light window in the centre, and a six-panel door with glazed toplights is located in the lower bay. The door is surrounded by a stone surround of fluted Doric pilasters and a full entablature with a flat hood. An extension to the east gable, likely from the early 19th century, is a two-storey lean-to. An attic window on the south-west has a vertical bar and a leaded casement. A cellar window on the north of the east range features an ovolo-mould. The interior is unreported but is said to include a spiral staircase and features indicating a former bacon-curing chamber.
