Description
This is a house, dating from around the late 15th century, with significant alterations in the late 16th or early 17th century, and further changes in the 19th century. The northeast end was rebuilt in the mid-20th century and is now a separate house. It is constructed of coursed limestone with a corrugated sheet steel roof and stone gable copings. A red brick gable stack is present. Originally a late Medieval house with a hall and inner room, the hall was floored and an axial stack inserted at the lower end around the late 16th or early 17th century, while the inner room was likely originally unheated and has a chamber above. The front wall has been raised, and most of the windows replaced in the 18th and 19th centuries. The rear (northwest) has lower eaves, a blocked opening, and an old two-light wooden mullion window with bead mouldings and remnants of an iron casement and wooden shutter. A single-story outshut with a lean-to roof is attached to the southwest end. Inside, the inner room features two unchamfered axial beams and a flagstone floor, with a plastered partition separating it from the hall. The hall has a six-panel framed ceiling with deeply-chamfered intersecting beams, and a moulded stone fireplace with a cambered arch. Joinery includes panelled and plank doors. The original roof structure consists of two raised or jointed cruck-trusses: the hall truss features chamfered arch-braces, while the hall chamber/solar truss is a closed truss. The roof has two tiers of purlins and chamfered curved wind-braces. The chambers are now ceiled, but the underside of the common-rafters and original thatch remains smoke-blackened over the hall.
