Description

Old Garden House is a detached house dating from the 17th century, with later modifications in the late 20th century. It is constructed of ham stone coursed rubble with ashlar dressings, and has a plain clay tiled roof between high coped gables, suggesting a former thatched roof. The east gable has a gabletted finial, while the west gable has an ashlar chimney stack. The house is arranged in an L-plan layout.

The north elevation is five bays and has random fenestration. It features hollow-chamfered mullioned windows in chamfered recesses. Bay 1 has a 3-light window to the first floor and a 2-light window to the ground floor, both 20th-century replacements. Bay 3 has a 3-light window to the ground floor, while bay 4 features 4-light windows on both levels. A small outshut or lean-to bay is located on the far right (bay 5) and contains a door and a casement window. Doorways are positioned to the first floor of bay 2, accessed by stone stairs, and to the ground floor of bay 2, to the right of the staircase.

The south elevation features a wing at the west end, which was formerly separated from the main building. All windows on this side are ovolo-mould mullioned, and there is a roughly central cambered-arched doorway. The interior was not inspected. The building was originally assessed in an unpublished report prepared in 1975 by the Victoria and Albert Museum, prior to the house's restoration, when it was used as a farm store.
