Description

Nos. 2 to 6 Crescent Road were built between 1884 and 1886 as part of George Dawson’s redevelopment of the Crown Hotel Estate. The design is attributed to the late J.H. Hirst and is similar in style to Nos. 1 to 3 Crown Place. The building is two windows wide with three storeys. It has a slated, hipped roof with bracketed eaves and is constructed of grit stone ashlar. Sill bands and a string course run at floor levels. The windows are two-light sashes with plain surrounds. The ground floor features rusticated pilasters and moulded shop window heads which spring from brackets with keys. A half-glazed house and shop doorway is present, complete with a fanlight above.

Nos. 4 to 6 were later additions by George Dawson, also extending over cellars. These sections are two windows wide and have three storeys. They are similarly constructed with a slated roof, bracketed eaves, and grit stone ashlar with pilaster bands between window bays and sill bands. The first floor features splayed bay windows. These buildings also have rusticated pilasters that carry an entablature, although the shop windows and doorways have been altered. The buildings are included on the list for group value, forming a group with Nos. 2 to 24 (even) and the Royal Baths in relation to No. 3 Crown Place.
