Description
Numbers 1 to 6 form a group of six houses built in the late 18th century as part of a longer terrace, St Hilda’s Terrace. Described in 1817 as "the finest street in Whitby", the terrace is an important architectural group.
The houses are constructed of brick with slate roofs, except for numbers 3 and 4. Number 1 has two gabled dormers, a cornice, and a parapet. Number 2 has one flat dormer and an early 19th-century wooden porch with a shaped lead roof. Numbers 1 and 2 feature enriched pedimented doorcases with fluted pilasters and six-panel doors. Numbers 3 and 4 have Ionic pilastered pedimented doorways with fanlights and six-panel doors, a central dentilled cornice, and a pediment with an enriched oval plaque. Numbers 5 and 6 have plain doorways and stone arches. Number 5 has a pantile roof with one dormer. Number 6 has a later cornice, two gabled dormers, and four and six-panel doors. All houses have double-hung sash windows with three windows each.
