Description
1-13 and 13A New Street is an early 19th-century terrace of shops. The building is constructed of brown brick, with some sections rendered, and features a pitched pantile roof. It stands three storeys high and has a brick modillion eaves cornice. The terrace comprises fourteen bays, with Nos 7 and 9 showcasing flush-framed sash windows, while the other windows are later additions. No 3 features a contemporary bowed oriel shop window with glazing bars and a moulded cornice. Nos 1 and 7 have mid-19th-century shop fronts with moulded cornices, and No 7's front includes consoles.
New Street was developed in the last decade of the 18th century, following the completion of the Selby Toll Bridge in 1792, which significantly improved access from the riverfront to the town centre. This terrace was originally known as Brunswick Terrace.
