Description

The Feathers Hotel comprises two houses, dating to the mid-17th century and the early 19th century. The earlier 17th-century section is timber-framed with a whitewashed rendered stone façade and a pantile roof. The 19th-century section is constructed of roughly squared coursed sandstone, also with a pantile roof and brick stacks. Originally, the 17th-century section had a through passage plan, though the former main entrance has been relocated to the centre of the building. This section is two storeys high and has three bays. It features a half-glazed door in a stone surround, flanked by 20th-century bow windows. The first floor has two casement windows and a single 3-light Yorkshire sash window. The roof is steeply pitched. The 19th-century section is three storeys high and has three bays, with a 6-panel door topped with a radial fanlight, set within an open-pedimented Ionic doorcase. A bow window with four panes is located to the left, with two similar windows on the right. The first and second floors each contain sash windows with four panes, set in stone surrounds. The building has a moulded cornice and gable coping. Chimneys are located at the ends of the building and along the ridge. Inside the 17th-century section, a half-cruck is visible in the bar and in a bedroom above, along with wooden panelling in the left side of the bar.
