Description

The Church of St Wilfrid is a Grade II* listed church with origins dating back to the 12th century, featuring windows from the 13th and 14th centuries. It underwent significant restoration in the 19th century. The church has a south porch added in the 19th century and is constructed of stone with cement rendering both inside and out. It has a Welsh slate roof with ashlar coping and kneelers, and a shingled bell tower.

The church consists of an aisleless nave, a bell tower, a south porch, and a chancel. On the south wall of the nave, there is a Norman window alongside a 13th-century window that has two pointed trefoil lights and a quatrefoil in plate tracery above. The chamfered doorway features a door with ogee-headed panelling. In the chancel, the north wall includes a Norman window and a remodelled Norman doorway, while the south wall has another 13th-century window similar to that in the nave. The east window, likely from the early 14th century, contains three trefoil lights with three quatrefoils above.

Inside, there is a black marble hexagonal font with concave sides decorated with shields, resting on a stone base that bears a donor inscription for Thomas le Scrope (died 14949) and his wife Elizabeth. The church also features some castellated bench ends of medieval origin and Gothic stalls carved by the Reverend W T Kingsley, who served as rector from 1859 to 1917.
