Description
York House is a mid-18th century building located on the east side of Market Place. It is a three-storey structure with five windows on each floor, framed in plain stone with rusticated keystones. The upper storey has two blocked windows. The roof is covered with stone slate. The ground floor contains two late 19th-century and modern shops. The central entrance door is original, featuring a shouldered case made of moulded stone, a pulvinated frieze, a small cornice, and a rectangular fanlight above. The exterior is rendered in painted stucco with rusticated quoins. The windows do not have glazing bars. York House forms a group with Nos 56 to 61 (consec), Nos 59A, 60 and 61 with the York County Savings Bank (Nos 4 to 10, even), Swale House on Frenchgate, and with Nos 1 to 9 (odd) Millgate.
