Description

Stainton Old Hall and adjoining house are a pair of houses, originally a single house, dating to 1657 and 1658, with later alterations and additions. The building is constructed of roughcast stone with slate roofs. The north elevation, of two storeys and an attic, has two bays, with the second bay projecting under a gable. The first bay features a sash window with single glazing bars to the first floor. The second bay has single-chamfered-mullioned windows of five lights to the ground floor, four lights to the first floor, and three lights to the attic, with small windows to the returns. The entrance to the first bay has an embattled lintel dated 1658 and a label mould, above a door with an overlight. The west elevation features a large projecting lateral stack with two-light windows to the right, over a small porch; the entrance lintel is dated 1657. A rear wing includes an outshut to the west, casement windows, and a cross-axial stack. The east elevation incorporates large 19th-century three-light windows with transoms to the south, a round-headed stair window, and a lateral stack. Internally, there are chamfered beams. Group value is demonstrated by the consistent detailing and historical significance of the structure.
