Description
Hawes Farmhouse is a house dating from the late 17th century, with later additions and alterations. It features limewashed rubble walls and a graduated slate roof, along with end chimney stacks. The building has two storeys plus attics, with the rear part constructed first. The front section, added in the early 19th century, has a hipped roof. The central entrance has a six-panelled door with an arched head in a chamfered stone surround, which may be reused. On either side of the door are two sash windows with slate drip moulds, and there are two additional sash windows above, which have vertical bars. The rear of the house includes a full-height staircase projection with late 19th-century sash windows on each half landing. Inside, there is a late 17th-century staircase featuring turned balusters and square newels topped with balls. Records indicate the property at Hawes (or Howes) has existed since the 13th century.
