Description

A terrace of six houses at 38–48 Scotland Road, built in the late 1830s. The houses are constructed of Flemish bond brickwork with light-coloured brick headers, sitting upon a chamfered plinth. The dressings are of calciferous sandstone, some of which has been painted. They have Welsh slate roofs and original shared ridge chimney stacks. The houses are two storeys high, with two bays per house. Because the terrace is built on a slope, the roofline is stepped, though this might also suggest slightly different dates of construction; the houses are double-depth. Each house features a panelled door positioned to the left or right, most with radial fanlights above. These doors are set within stone surrounds that include impost blocks and false keystones. Stone-surrounded through-passages exist between some of the houses, with a larger carriage arch between numbers 42 and 44. The windows are sash windows, and some retain original glazing bars. All are set within stone architraves; two houses have had canted bay windows inserted. The interiors were not inspected.
