Description
72 High Street is an early 19th-century building in Maryport, Cumbria, a town established in the mid-18th century on a planned grid pattern by Humphrey Senhouse to serve local industries and as a shipping point. The town expanded throughout the 19th century, serving iron and steel industries, with shipbuilding developing, before experiencing a decline with the cessation of major industrial activity in the late 1920s. The High Street runs north to south along an elevated ridge, potentially having earlier origins than the 18th century. Historically, it was a mixed area of residences and shops. 72 High Street served as an upholsterer’s shop in the late 19th century.
The building is a three-storey rendered structure. It has a ground-floor shopfront with a half-glazed door and narrow pilasters supporting a fascia and cornice. The upper floors each contain two sash windows, which likely have later glazing bars.
