Description

The Gatehouse and attached wash-house, gatepiers, gates, and walls are a cottage and associated structures built between 1900 and 1901 by William Huckvale for Charles Rothschild. They are constructed from coursed squared stone with Collyweston slate roofs, featuring stone-coped gables and finials. The building has stone ridge and end stacks with linked double and quadruple moulded ashlar flues.

Designed in the Vernacular Revival style, the cottage has a gable facing the front. To the left, there is a carriage and pedestrian gate screen across a now disused drive. The cottage is two storeys high with a three-window range at the first floor, showcasing stone mullioned windows. The central window is a low three-light, flanked by two two-light windows set in a stone-coped gabled dormer with a finial. Below, there is a similar three-light window with a hoodmould, flanked by a moulded Tudor arch that leads to a recessed doorway. The left gable end features a part-projecting stack but is otherwise blank, while the right gable facing has a square bay with four-light and single-light windows, as well as a three-light window with a hoodmould above.

To the right of the rear wing, there is a two-light window, and at the far right is the single-storey wash-house with a blank gable facing. The gate screen to the left consists of a high carriage gateway with pedestrian gates on either side, all set within stone walls. The gateway is adorned with elaborately moulded ashlar gatepiers topped with cornices and inverted openwork brackets that support an obelisk. The gates feature decorative ironwork and an elaborate overthrow with scrolls and repousse flowers and foliage. The pedestrian gates on either side have Tudor arches with hood moulds and decorative ironwork. This ensemble forms a picturesque group and is part of the significant collection of model estate buildings in Ashton, built by Charles Rothschild.
