Description

Barn House is a house dating from the mid-17th and late 17th centuries. It is constructed of squared coursed limestone with a thatched roof and follows an L-shaped plan. The main front has three bays, displaying a three-light stone mullion window design with drip moulds. A 20th-century door is centrally positioned to the right, featuring a moulded stone surround, a plain entablature, and a simple cornice. Large limestone quoins are visible. The building has ashlar gable parapets with kneelers, and ashlar stacks with moulded cornices at the ridge and ends. A rear wing, built with different materials, is similarly styled. The abutment where the two wings meet is stepped, with a single-light window set within stone surrounds on the external corner of each face. A large lateral stone stack with ashlar flues is also present. A thatched cottage attached to the rear of the main house matches the style and is now incorporated into the building. The rear elevation of the main house mirrors the front, with stone mullion windows. First-floor windows in the rear wing retain their original leaded diamond panes. Inside, a room to the left of the entrance features a 17th-century open fireplace with a square-head moulded stone surround. A similar fireplace is found in the rear wing, with a four-centre head. The kitchen to the left of the entrance has remains of an open fireplace and a bressumer. Two first-floor rooms boast 17th-century fireplaces, also with four-centre heads.
