Description

The Old Manse is a small house dating from the early 18th century, with later additions and rebuilding. The front facade features timber studding with whitewashed plaster infill, while the rear is brick and the original gable walls are rubble stone. The thatched roof is half-hipped to the north and has brick end stacks. The house is 1½ storeys high with three bays. It has three-light leaded casement windows, with those on the first floor set beneath thatched eyebrows. A central doorway is sheltered by a 20th-century gabled porch, which also incorporates leaded casement windows to its sides. 19th- and 20th-century extensions are visible at both gables; a full-height extension to the left and a single-storey extension with a tiled roof to the right, both rendered and whitewashed, with some brick visible in the street gable end.

Local climate

The Old Manse sits in a drier-than-average part of the UK, with an average of 730 mm of rain a year. This makes it drier than 78% of listed buildings in the UK. Its exposure to wind-driven rain is lower than that of 75% of listed buildings.

It experiences an average of 36 freeze-thaw cycles a year, more than 63% of listed buildings. Of these, 16 follow at least 1 mm of rain in the preceding 48 hours. Average temperatures at this location have risen by 0.3°C per decade since 1991.

Averages for 1991–2020; temperature trend 1991–2025. Figures describe the wider area (a grid cell of roughly 10 km), not the individual site. Contains modified Copernicus Climate Change Service information 2026.
