Description

Gray's Monument is a significant structure built in 1799 by architect James Wyatt. It was commissioned by John Penn, the grandson of William Penn, who was the owner of Stoke Park at the time. The monument features a large stone pedestal adorned with panels that are inscribed with verses from Thomas Gray's "Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard." Atop the pedestal sits a sarcophagus, which is characterized by its strigillated side panels.
