Description

Ashridge Farmhouse is a house dating from the late 17th century, with alterations made subsequently. The house is timber-framed with brick infill to the first floor; the central bay features some herringbone brick patterning, while the left-hand gabled bay has been rendered. The ground floor has been rebuilt in brick, and the rear portion of the cross wing was rebuilt using flint with thin brick dressings. The roofs are tiled and the chimneys are reconstructed in thin brick with offset heads. The house is arranged in a 'L' shape, with a later staircase placed in the rear angle. The cross wing to the left is two storeys high and has 20th-century tilting casement windows. The centre bay is single-storey with an attic, containing a three-light barred wooden casement on the ground floor and a similar two-light casement above, set within a gabled dormer. The right-hand bay was rebuilt or added around 1800, constructed of flint and brick with a hipped roof and a 20th-century porch. A 20th-century lean-to has been added to the left. The interior retains more timber framing, including steep curved wind braces and stop-chamfered spine beams in the central bay. The main fireplace, located to the right of the centre bay, has a 19th-century surround with a fine gun rack.
