Description
A row of six cottages located on Nelson Street, Buckingham, dating to the mid-to-late 18th century, with alterations from the 19th and 20th centuries. The cottages are constructed of uncoursed limestone rubble, with a front wall of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, incorporating some flared headers. The front wall of No. 55 is painted. The roofs are covered with plain tiles, and brick stacks are visible at the ridge and ends. Each cottage has a two-unit plan. The building presents a twelve-window facade over two storeys. Doors with six panels and partial glazing are found at Nos. 56 and 57. Other doors are 20th-century replacements, all with flat arched heads, with the exception of the door at No. 58, which has a cambered arched head. Ground-floor windows are set in three- and four-light openings with flat arches, with No. 59 having fascias and No. 60 featuring small central sashes. First-floor windows are three-light casements, except for those at Nos. 59 and 60, which have small central sashes and flat-arched heads. A plinth is rendered on Nos. 55 and 56. Various 19th and 20th-century extensions are evident at the rear. The interior of No. 55 retains chamfered spine beams to rooms on either side of a former central passage, leading from the front door to the back, and old stud partitions.
