Description

Littleburn is a house dating from the late 18th and early 19th century, with possible earlier origins. It was built for the Rokeby family. The house is constructed of coursed rubble with a stone slate roof. It has two storeys and an attic, arranged in five bays. Rusticated ashlar defines the quoins. The central entrance features a part-glazed door within an ashlar architrave, flanked by consoles that support a cornice. Eight-pane casement windows are set within ashlar architraves. The roof features shaped kneelers, moulded ashlar coping, and corniced end stacks.

At the rear, the ground floor has a sash window with glazing bars within an architrave, followed by a two-light chamfered mullion window and a three-light chamfered mullion window. A part-glazed door is contained within a surround with chamfered jambs. The first floor has a three-light double-chamfered mullion window, a round-arched landing window with imposts and a keystone, a chamfered mullion-and-transom window, and another three-light double-chamfered mullion window.

The house was the residence of the Lords Rokeby, including the 4th Lord Rokeby, who wrote a drama, "John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough", which was published in Leyburn.
