Description

Hill Top House is a house dating back to approximately 1830, with a rear wing from the 18th century. The main house was constructed at a right angle to this older wing and subsequently altered in the 19th century. The house is built of combed sandstone ashlar with a stone slate roof. It is two storeys high and consists of three bays, with the central bay set back. The entrance features a Greek revival portico with a plain entablature supported by unfluted Doric columns. All windows are two-light designs with a wedge lintel, plain sill, and a recessed panel below, containing sashes. The upper floor windows have ten panes each. A string course runs below the window sills, and the eaves are dentilled only at the central bay. Gable end ridge stacks are present.

Inside, the house retains the original 19th-century staircase plan and fittings.

The rear wing is constructed of slobbered rubble with stone dressings and a stone slate roof, and also has two storeys and three bays. The central entrance has a plain surround and a moulded gabled hood; the former six-panel door has its lower two panels boarded, while the upper two feature diamond bolection mouldings. A three-light window from the 18th century is present on the ground floor, with a plain surround and recessed flat-faced mullions. The central sash remains, while the outer lights are fixed with 21 panes each. The remaining windows are 19th-century replacements, though the upper floor window to the right of centre replaces a wider, lower 18th-century window. There are gable-end chimneys at the left-hand side and at a former right-hand gable.
