Description
The Old Hall is a Grade II listed building located on Threshfield Main Street. It is the remains of a house, originally built in the 16th century, likely for the Radcliffe family, and was rebuilt in the mid to late 19th century. The structure is made of gritstone and features a graduated stone slate roof.
This square, single-storey building has its entrance on the gabled north-east side, which includes quoins. The entrance front has a board door on the left, set in a deeply-chamfered quoined surround with a shallow Tudor arch. To the right of the door, there is a window with four lights (the left light is blocked) and three round-headed lights that have cavetto moulded mullions and deeply cut spandrels. A similar window with four lights is found on the right return, while the left return features a two-light window made of reused masonry. A short stone stack is located on the rear gable.
Inside, there is a cast-iron range in a plain stone surround at the fireplace on the left of the rear wall. The interior has no internal partitions, and the roof is supported by a 19th-century king post truss using cast-iron bolts. Meat hooks are fastened to the cross-beam. The masonry of the north-east and north-west walls, which contain the early windows, is better dressed and coursed than that of the south-east wall, indicating that these may be the surviving walls of the Radcliffe home. Rafe Radcliffe, son of Anthony, was appointed High Constable of the Wapentake of Staincliffe in 1595/6 and was noted as being 'of Threshfield Hall' in 1607.
