Description

Old Brewery House is a former brewery and house, now a house, dating to the 17th century with subsequent alterations in the 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. The left-hand section is constructed of coursed and uncoursed flint, with a red brick rebuild in the centre, and a 20th-century return front of red brick on the ground floor with tile hanging above. It has a plain tiled roof with a tall 17th-century red brick stack towards the left end of the ridge and a 19th-century ridge stack at the right end. There is a central large gabled dormer with paired sashes without glazing bars. The building is single storey with an attic and basement. A 3-light casement is in the head of the red brick central section, with a basement light below, and a 2-light casement with a brick-dressed segment-head to the left. A 2-light window with a moulded stone surround is located in the attic of the left-hand return front. The right-hand section is timber-framed with a painted brick ground floor and tile-hung first floor, and a plain tiled roof with a tall brick stack behind the ridge at the right end. A gabled cross-wing, slightly lower than the main ridge, is set at the left end. The plan is L-shaped, with a shallow projecting crosswing to the left. The front has two storeys and two window openings, with plain 3-light casements and a part-glazed boarded door between, set beneath a flat hood. The crosswing has a blank end. The interior is reported to contain 17th-century panelling and an early 17th-century staircase. This building is recognised for its group value.
